Getting started · about ten minutes

From installed to a cited answer.

Four steps. The third is the one people skip and then wonder why nothing answers.

¶ 1 Install

Download and open it.

Get the installer for Windows or Linux. It is not yet code-signed, so Windows will report an unidentified developer — choose More info, then Run anyway.

There is no account, no sign-in and no server to reach. The app opens straight into your own workspace.

¶ 2 The one thing that runs elsewhere

Bring your own model key.

The language model is the only part of NyayVaani that cannot run on a laptop. You bring a key from a provider you choose and pay directly — Anthropic, OpenAI, Google or Fireworks. It is held in this computer's keychain and is never sent to us.

Settings → Model access, paste the key, save. Most providers show a new key exactly once, so copy it before you close that tab.

Until a key is added NyayVaani can open matters, attach documents and hold briefs — but it cannot answer, draft or extract. If the app seems inert, this is almost always why.

¶ 3 Your files, where they already are

Open a matter and point it at a folder.

A matter is a deal or a dispute: a name, a folder on this machine, and everything NyayVaani is allowed to read for it. Attaching a document does not copy it — the file stays where your firm's filing already puts it, and NyayVaani reads it in place.

PDFs and DOCX files are read for text and anchored by page and clause. A scan with no text layer attaches and is viewable, and is honestly excluded from search and citation checks rather than silently treated as empty.

¶ 4 The part worth judging

Ask something you already know the answer to.

Start with a question you can check — an indemnity cap, a governing-law clause, a notice period. Every sentence that makes a claim about your documents carries a citation you can click through to the clause it came from.

That is the whole proposition, and the only way to judge it is against a document you know. A confident answer with no source is the failure mode this product exists to refuse.

¶ 5 What it does not do yet

Where beta actually shows.

Scans are not read
A PDF with no text layer is attached and shown, but not searched or cited. Reading them is coming; pretending to read them is not.
The AI cannot use tools yet
It answers from the documents in scope. It cannot go and fetch, search or act on its own — including through a connector you have added, which can be registered and tested but not yet used in an answer.
Citations are checked against your documents
Not yet against reported law. A quote is verified to appear in the file it claims to come from; whether the judgment it cites exists is a later release.
Windows and Linux
macOS will arrive signed rather than as an unverified first impression.

Something wrong, or something missing? Tell us what broke — a wrong answer with the document that produced it is the most useful thing you can send.
